What Is A Superfood?

Superfoods are a hot topic in the world of health and wellness. There are many articles written on this topic daily. Superfood is simply a term for food said to confer various health advantages resulting from an extraordinary nutrient density. However, the term is very commonly misused by nutritionists, dietitians and other experts, most of whom contest that certain foods possess the so called health advantages claimed by their proponents. This is primarily due to the fact that a particular food can be classified as a superfood based on the media attention it has received. In other words, the term superfood is very often used as a marketing catch phrase.

A lot of food manufacturers, especially the ones dealing with grains and seeds, claim to be using or making these foods qualify as superfoods. There are also other foods that make up the “treatment” category of superfoods. Some examples of this include ginger, aloe vera, seaweed, licorice and turmeric. They are all included in the diet of some individuals but in very limited quantities. There is no scientific reason why these foods should be included in a healthy diet as they are not proven to be effective against any disease. They are simply included in order to provide antioxidants and aid in the prevention of degenerative diseases like diabetes.

The inclusion of salmon in your diet is often cited as a superfood. Salmon is rich in omega 3 fatty acids that are essential for cell membrane function. This is the reason why it has been considered as a superfood for a long time. However, there is no clinical evidence that proves that salmon is capable of increasing the levels of arginine, an amino acid that helps in smooth muscle contractions. On the contrary, there are several reports that report about the negative effects of eating too much salmon.

Another example of such a fruit is blueberries. Blueberries are commonly regarded as superfoods because of their numerous health properties. It is believed that blueberries have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help in the management of arthritis. In addition, blueberries are considered to possess calcium properties, iron-aids and potassium levels that contribute to proper brain functioning. However, there are no controlled scientific evidence that prove these claims.

Avocados are another favorite of many people. They are considered to be a superfood due to its many health benefits. It is believed that avocado is loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants. However, there is no adequate scientific evidence that prove these claims.

Chia seeds are also considered to be a superfood. They are filled with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B-complex, magnesium, zinc, and potassium. They are easy to digest, have no effect on blood pressure, and contain no cholesterol at all. These factors make chia seeds an ideal addition to your daily diet. Chia seeds can be added to your diet in the form of flax seeds or as a supplement to other fruits and vegetables.
